I have what I hope is a quick question.

I have an AlBook 1.25 with 1Gig of ram. It has the 64MB video card. The max resolution of my built-in display is 1280 x 854.

Here's my question/problem:
I live in Japan and just bought a Toshiba 32 HD tv. Yay for me. It has all sorts of ports and plugs and what-not on it, which is cool. But when I want to watch a dvd, or an episode of LOST or something using my tv the max resolution it shows as having is 1040 x 768. Is that because I am connected via s-video? I understand my tv to have a max resolution of 1366 x 768. If I were to get a DVI - DFP cable, hooking into the HD port on my tv would that fix the resolution problem, or is there some cool thing I don't know about the prefs on my mac?

Any help in this area is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Good luck. You're embarking on a journey that will ask as many questions as it answers. Hooking a computer to a TV seems so simple, but to optimize it to a point that the common TV viewer is accustomed to is very hard.

As odd as it sounds, I haven't been able to find the cable, DVI - DFP, I need in Japan. I'll be taking a trip to Tokyo this month, and will look there, but won't waste too much effort on it. I have found a site on the net that sells the cable I need, and ships to Japan, and is pretty reasonably priced.

If anybody cares about the results, I'll be posting them when I get the cable.
If the results are good, I'm getting a new Mac Mini for my entertainment center (server).

On HDTV's, the S-video, VGA, and Composite inputs are limited to below-HD resolutions. On my HDTV I can only get HD from the Component (Y, Pb, Pr) and HDMI inputs (it doesn't have DVI).

Is DFP something that's common on TV's in Japan? I've never heard of it before. According to Answers.com, DFP is limited to 1024x768, but I'm not sure if that's true for your TV.

According to the manual for the tv I should be able to get full use of all my beautiful 1366 x 768 when I plug the cable into my DFP port. According to the site I found the cable on, it says the cable supports a max res of 1920 x 1080. I'm guessing I will be able to get full use of my display with the cable.

DFP is somewhat common on TV's in Japan, but mostly limited to the lower-end of the HD lines. I'm into entertainment and all, but I'm not putting out $4,000 on a tv. If I had that much to spend on fun, I'd buy a new Mac instead.

HDMI is by far more common, and more expensive all around. The DVI - DFP cable 6'6" will run about $28 shipped to me. A similar DVI - HDMI cable at the store, and on many online stores will run from $60 to $120. Thankfully I don't have HDMI, though the quality would be nice.

If Answers.com is correct, and DFP is limited to 1024x768, then my TV is lame.

Either way, we'll see. I think it is worth $30 to test.
