Has anyone gotten their hands on one of the new models (DSC-S30, S50, or S70)? They look like they may bee good cameras for the money. 1-3 Megapixel, memory stick, USB, compact design...Can anyone give a quick review of one of these?

Yes, I've had a chance to play with all 3. It's a good, better, best option. As you go up the line, you go from 1.3 to 3.3 mega-pixel on the DSC-S70. I've transferred images from the DSC-S70 to my iMac DVSE through the USB. After a driver install, it was quick & easy. The camera popped right up on the desktop! After using all 3, I'm partial to the DSC-S70. If you have any specific questions, I'll try to answer them.

I use the DCS-70 for 2 weeks now, and I'm pretty happy with it.
The autonomy is good, I took around 100 picture without flash using the zoom.
I transfer the pictures to my power mac 8600 through the USB (I added an USB card). It's very quick. I just bought a 64 MB memory stick, I'm able to take more than 800 picture in low res, and aroud 70 in Hi res.

Thanks for your replies.

You two need to register. I can't email you with a question unless you do :-P

Anyway, I'm not a pro-photographer or anything like that. I just want a decent camera that takes decent pictures. Based on your responses, the cybershot line sounds good. I'd like the sounds of the S70, but is there really a big difference between the quality of the S70 and the S50? Thanks again.

Yeah, I guess I should register. What are you going to do with your shots? If you plan on using them mainly on your computer (e-mail to friends, post on a website, etc.) and occassional smaller photographic prints, the DSC-S50 will work great. If you're going to make a lot of larger photographic prints (5 x 7 or bigger), you'll appreciate the extra pixels of the DSC-S70. Back to you...

I am in the market also, and have decided to go with the Canon PowerShot G1. I need a movie mode, and the Sony's MPEG encoding is more of a headache than it's worth. The Canon saves 30 sec (vs Sony's 15) video files as an AVI, which is easily modifiable in the Mac environment. Furthermore, the Motion-JPEG compression is adjustable, a big deal for me.

The clincher was that memory sticks are overpriced. The G1 can use the 340MB IBM Microdrive which runs about 299 bucks. It comes with 16MB standard, the Sony S50 only comes with 4MB.

I also looked at the Olympus 490, but it doesn't capture audio in its movie mode (WTF?).

For good reviews on digi-cams, go to http://www.steves-digicams.com/ . It's a great resource, and they do price comparisons too. Imaging-resource.com is good too.
