Hi All,

Has anyone had any luck getting new hard drives to work in these machines. I purchased a new 40Gb seagate IDE drive and stuck it in my G3 as a slave.

When I run Drive setup it sees the drive but gives an error when initialising. I have now tried the drive as master, as slave on the second IDE bus all with somewhat differing results, the best is when on the second bus, if formats it but locks up if you use the drive, if you install Mac OS onto the drive and try to boot - nothing!!!
I have even tried FWB toolkit, but again -- errors.

I have since taken the drive to work and stuck it in my G4 as a slave, and it works beautifully.

Any ideas???

The beige G3's had some problems like that... have you tried it as the sole drive in the machine (master, of course)?

Bus problems aside, any IDE drive should work on any machine capable of taking them, really...

A 75GXP works fine in my 5500...

I have tried it as the sole drive. At different times it has given me different results, none of them that work. Sometimes it sees the drive and allows you to format, though locks up when trying to install Mac OS onto it.

I've managed to install Mac OS on the drive when it was set as slave, then remove other drive and set as master, but the machine doesn't recognise it as bootable.

The annoying thing is that it works first go in the G4 at work... which is where I have the least problems with disk space.

Bus problems aside, any IDE drive should work on any machine capable of taking them, really...
