I have a Titanium 500. What is the fastest FireWire HD out there right now? I'm fine with the 7200 rpm I see, but I'm wondering if there are any FireWire cases or drives that top out at over 30 mg / second sustained? I want to use the very best external Hard drive I can for audio apps (Logic). Would I be better off to get one of the Travelstar internal 48 gig 5400 rpm drives?
Thanks!!!

... also, I'm wondering if I might be hosed since I now come to learn that the TiBook 500 (rev. A) has poor FireWire performance. For audio programs it looks like maybe I should upgrade to a new internal 48 gig IBM but the rpm on those is 5400 (not 7200 as is suggested for audio apps). Shoot, what IS my best option????

I believe the fasted FireWire chipset out there is the Oxford 911 chipset. I know that OWC sells enclosures based off this chipset, and possible the full drive/enclosure package. Personally I'd recommend buying an enclosure and drive separately so that you can pick whatever drive you want for it. In that case I'd definitely recommend an OWC enclosure. I use one myself, and am very pleased with it. I'm not too up to date on hard drives at the moment, so I won't try and tell you what drive to put in it, but that shouldn't be too hard.

www.barefeats.com has tested a number of new-generation FW drives and enclosures. Some use the Oxford 911 chip, some (e.g. EZQuest) use their own designs.
The new MacWorld has a short article listing the companies that sell them. OWC, Granite Digital, etc.
The new issue of PC Magazine has a brief review of the new Maxtor FW drive, which uses the Oxford 911. I think it did about 25 mbps, which appears to be in the same ballpark as the other new-generation enclosures.
I don't think there are any FW hard drives yet that can do 30 mbps. About 25 mbps seems to be the best they can do. But the reviews seem to indicate that they are now fast enough for DV, so I would guess that they're fast enough for audio as well.

What about doing a PCMCIA to FireWire adaptor on the TI's slot, would that solve the slow FireWire performance issue on the Ti?
