First of all, I'm a student, so I have little money (huge understatement...) to spend on stuff these days. I have been able to gather the money for an iPod, but I can't push that to cover a remote too.
The question is, if steve unveils the remote at MWSF (in his ipod demo/speech), would apple bundle it with the pod?? Considering it was ment to ship with it in the first place (placement in the packaging a sure givaway)......
Opinions?

I had heard that the supposed 'extra' space in the packaging was to accommodate international power adapters that are bigger than the two-pronged US style plug.
Just my 2p.

Regardless of what the extra space in the box is for, I think that a remote is very likely—whether or not it is released at MWSF is another issue however... If it is, I suspect it would be shipped with the iPod as it would be very useful (in fact, the first time I went anywhere with my iPod I found myself wishing it had a remote).

but then that'd screw people (me) who already got an ipod without a remote....maybe they'll sell it for an additional $20 or so cause that we be a bad move coming out 2 months later changing their product and what they pack with it.......people (me) would be very angry

...but there doesn't to seem to be any IR port to be able to transfer the signal from a remote. Unless it was a wired remote. I don't want another wire attaching to it from my pocket. A free upgrade would be nice. Of course it'll probably have the mandatory 9.99 or 19.99 shipping fee that we'll have to pay unless we pick it up from a local retailer. blah blah blah.

If a remote is released, it would most likely be wired into the earbuds, like the Sony Clie
See Here
If it is bundled, I, as an early adopter, would be bummed, but I would not feel screwed. I bought the iPod based on the features it came with, and it was worth it to me. Products always get better and cheaper. It's a fact of life.

If you take a look a look at Diagnostic mode of your iPod (http://www.ipoding.com/prev/001.html), you can see that one of the checks if for the remote. It will be a wired remote that sits "in-line" with your headphones. Check the Headphone jack on the iPod and you'll see the extra contacts around the hole that you plug your headphones into it...
I remember reading somewhere on this board that someone plugged in their Sony remote for their minidisc or discman and they were able to control the volume (and nothing else).. A remote is definitely coming and if it's a ~$25 add-on, I'll pick it up. It would make controlling the iPod much easier when it's tucked away in your pocket of your coat or your bag...

The question is: will the remote be integrated into a new headphone design, or will it be a separate pice so that you can use it with any headphones?

Definitely a separate piece... You will plug the remote into the headphone jack and your headphones into it.. (at least I hope!).
For the most part, this is the way I've seen headphone remotes work... You never know with Apple <cough>proprietary equipment/designs</cough>

Just for the record :-
The UK iPod packages do not have any spare spaces for a remote.
The extra space is used up by the larger 'plug' fitted to the mains lead for the charger.
We are unlucky in the UK, we can't plug the charger direct into the wall outlet like in the US. On or chargers the plug that sits on the corner is missing and we have to connect a long lead with a UK plug on the end of it.
If they do ship a remote it will either need to fit in the existing space, or they may simply revise the internals of the pack.

The story I heard was that it was a Panasonic remote that came with one of their CD players...
(For what it's worth, that plug looks almost identical to the remote plug on my Sony Minidisc Recorder)

i love the ipod and a remote (and mic someday) would be awesome. as a warning: when i busted my sony minidisc player/recorder's remote (the stick style) they asked $100 for a new one.
i got one through warenty and some talkin, but still, pricey.
people complaining about apple's markup must not buy sony.
just some info
