I am looking to set up an outdoor web camera which is out of USB cable distance of a Mac. Inetcam offers a camera that can be up to 500 ft away but is only works with a PC. Any suggestions?

I do have Virtual PC but I would like to keep this as simple as possible. VPC always seems to introduce a few extra problems.

Why not go to www.x10.com, grab one of their wireless cams, and use the digitizer of your choice to grab the video feed from it?

I have used the x10 and it works like a charm. The only thing you need is a video input card or an AV Mac. Basically it has a transmitter and then a wireless receiver which is attached to a video output (svideo) which jacks into a capture card.

I'm using the x10 xcam now, and it's great:

the only thing is it has the chance of interfering with airport networks.

the x-10 stuff works well, but the picture quality is not great by any stretch. Also, it works on line of site for 100' and furthermore operates on 2.4ghz frequency which is......... tada! airport's frequency too. It will kill your airport hub if positioned in the wrong place.
If you have money look at sitezap.com.
They have an incredible product.
If this is for fun then do the x-10.

I'd suggest you use any kind of regular surveillance camera with either a long cable connection or wireless (there are several solutions) and get the video signal into your Mac with a Video-USB converter, like the one from Interex/XLR8 (InterView).
I am working with a similar setup; the advantage is, you can really use any camera/connection with composite or S-Video outputs on the market, because there is a huge supply of those, and they're cheaper than USB cams.

I've had good experiences with the Axis WebCams - they are cameras with an ip address and a web server built in. They provide a little javascript for embeeding motion pics as well. They have an outdoor model but I haven't tried it.
