I have a recently purchased iMac DV SE with an Epson Stylus Color 740i printer and a UMAX 1600U scanner. Using VistaScan 3.5.4, which was included with the scanner, I am able to perform a 'Scan to File.' 'Scan to Print' always hangs the OS, therefore I quit trying it. Alternately, I open the scanned image (Which is in TIFF format) using Adobe PhotoDeluxe. I can open and save the photo but when I try to print it, the system hangs. Moreover, when I attempt to open the TIFF image using Polaroid PhotoMax Pro, the system returns a 'system Error Type 2.' I get either error message when trying to open the image in ANY application I try. I tried altering virtual memory, application memory and anything else I can think of. Please help!!!

This looks like more than one problem. Lets break them apart:

Printer:
So, does it print fine in other programs? Does it print in any program? If not, try removing the Epson Class USB Extensions from the Extensions folder. The Apple USB extensions cover much of that functionality.

If that fails, deinstall the Epson drivers and reinstall, remembering to toss those Epson Class USB extensions.

As for the TIFF file problem, it sounds like the file is getting corrupted (careful, genius at work here). Now we have to get at what is causing that corruption.

The printer problem and the file corruption may be related if you are running both USB devices through a hub, and you have to be doing something like that because the keyboard takes up one USB plug and only one other plug is left open.

If either of the troublesome devices is plugged into the keyboard (which is actually an unpowered hub itself), that could be where the problem lies.

In that case, the solution is either a good hub (I prefer Asante) or using only one of the printer or the scanner at a time.

Hope this helps.

I'll continue to monitor this thread til we get you some satisfaction.

Thanks for your input. I apologize for not replying sooner. I've been travelling and just startrd a new job.

The Epson 740i is plugged directly into the iMac--in USB port 1. It prints color documents written in Appleworks, PDF and small photos using Poparoid Photo Max. However, it doesn't print large photos. The light on the front of the picture flashes twice as if it thinks it's printing, but the paper doesn't even feed.

I trashed the Epson USB Print Class Drivers and had the same results. I also (more than once) deleted every file that was named Epson and re-installed the drivers.

I can't believe I'm the only one having this problem since Value America sold thousands of these packages. The value of the printer/scanner/iMac bundle was the key factor in convincing my wife to stay with Macintosh over the Dark Side.

Thanks in advance.
