Hi,
I just bought a ti powerbook (my first ever Mac!) and am looking to get a firewire cd burner. Does anyone have any suggestions? The one store that I've gone to here (I'm in Canada) only carries LaCie products. Any other suggestions?
Thanks

Oh the mystery question =) Seems like a lot of people ask this, and no one gives a real answer, at least about running it under OS X which is my concern. That said, I intend to buy a LaCie 24x U&I. They seem to get better feedback than the Que! drives. Apple has a list of which drives iTunes supports, http://www.apple.com/itunes/notes.html

yes, and there have been recent (and long) discussions in this very forum about Firewire CD burners. Give search a try and you're bound to come up with a couple hours of reading.
I'm also looking into a FireWire CD-RW. Que and LaCie are the top two on my list. I'm waiting on an update (OS 10.1.2) before making a decision.

I will gladly sell you my LaCie 12x4x32 firewire burner wuth burn proof tech, It will do a compleat 800mb Cd in about 6 mins and has really quick rip times. I will let you have it for about 120 dollars. And oh yeah it can burn from OSX in itunes and the finder, great drive never spit out a bad cd.
If not then just make your own with a firewire enclosure and a cheep TDK 24x16x40 drive, total cost would be about 50 bucks cheeper then the Lacie.

LaCie drives are fine. My second choice would be Que. We've sold a few different brands at the store where I work, and the LaCie brand has been the most reliable.
Welcome to the Mac world!

I would also back up the LaCie decision. Very reliable and also a nice looking case design. We sell a lot of LaCie where I work too.

Yamaha makes good drives, too. They have some FW drives out, but I think they currently top out at 20x.
That said, I've got a LaCie 24x U&I on order right now and I can't wait to get it. Seems to be the fav model here.

LaCie sucks @ss. They are very big and VERY loud. You have to manually turn them on and off just to shut the stupid fan up.
Sure they work fine but so does my Que Firewire which is always on and comes with a nice carrying bag.
Que are also sold in Canada.

Hwen are they coming out with speeds higher than 24x?
i'm just asking but, would the next revision be 32x or 36x
or is there going to boost? because i believe 24x is too fast for some buffers (2mb and less) to buff?
if there is 24x prices is gonna drop like a rock like the 12x and 16x

to answer the poster above, Que said it'd have a 32x mid-to-late December.
B/c of time constraints, I went ahead and purchased 2 QPS 24x drives from outpost.com. Sure, they say 1 per customer, but we'll see about that...one of them has already shipped.

Remember you also need to find disks that support 24 or 32x.
I have never seen anything over 16x.

That's a good point, and I meant to pose this very question. Has anyone tried using 16x media in a 24x burner? I remember using 4x CDs in an 8x burner and not having a problem.
Are burners smart enough to know what the media's speed rating is? I wasn't sure if this wasn't somehow encoded on the blank.

Yes, but it is the software that is smart I think. Toast and iTunes are smart enough to know.

If you would like to risk burning out your firewire ports, you may like to ponder on the wisdom of buying a very smart-looking Formac. On-line Mac support site searches should throw more light on this fascinating topic.
Personally I favour Que, but from a good dealer, as postings tend to imply that email responses are not their forte.

so the other order didn't go through. the cust service guy said the order system immediately paired down my order once it came time to charge the card before shipping. No problem--my mom ordered one in short order

I'm a big fan of Yamaha drives - most Yamahas have an 8mb buffer (compared to most other vendors who only have 2mb). Buffer underruns are practically nonexistent on my 2100EZ - coasterproof! DEalNN recently listed a 16x10x40 firewire for $140 after rebate, so keep your eyes open!

Well I did it. I went out and bought a new CDRW from the Local Apple Store in my area. The 3 drives they recommend are the QUE,LACIE and Yamaha, not in any particular order. I know that LACIE has supported the Mac for an Extremely long time and from what I hear there Mac support is very good. On that reccomendation I purchased the LACIE U&I Drive.
Someone said it was loud. I can't tell the difference, I think the fan in my G4 is louder. Anyway I am looking forward to Many days of good burning with my new Drive. Yipee now I can stay 99.7 Percent in OS X no need to switch into OS 9 to burn Cd's anymore like I had to with my Original Que USB drive.
