Bought a 160GB OWC Mercurey Elite FW800+USB external hard drive 1/13/06.
When it arrived I initialized it and plugged into my 81GB iMac running on OS 10.2.8. I cloned my hard drive with Carbon Copy Cloner and backed up daily using the schedule. No problems. Then I erased the drive with Disk Utility and used it with my new G5 iMac G5 with OS 10.4.2 first using CCC then switching to SilverKeeper, backed up daily with no problems.
Then erased the external hard drive again with Disk Utility, and I switched it back to my iMac with OS 10.2.8,. Now I can't get any program to do a back up. The external hard drive seems to be stuck on the OS 10.4.2 and it won't reformat, if that's what needs to be done.

I tried using my disk utility upteen times and have run Disk Warrior on both my hd and my external hd.
I've repaired permissions.
Everything seems fine, except that I can't do a back up.
SilverKeeper won't complete a scan of the hard drive and CCC quits when copying from hd to external hd.

I'm wondering what I did wrong.

Susan, just a shot in the dark: when you erase, try "zeroing" the disk. There should be a choice in the erase window of Disk Utility for "security options", click on it, and select the option to write zeroes to the disk, thus completely erasing all information on it. A normal erase doesn't erase anything except the directory, leaves all data and programs intact. This might do it. Dale Meyn.

Thanks, Dale.
I didn't remember that initializing the disk in 10.2.8 allowed for zeroing.
But, I've got Silverkeeper working now. It seems to be backing up, but I can do a scheduled backup. And for some reason it keeps showing an error message altho' it seems to be doing a full back up.
Arghhh...

I'll sit down one night and start from scratch.
Thanks again.
