I have a G4 with a USB scanner, printer, hub, USB to serial adapter, keyboard and mouse. Problem is...I hook the keyboard and hub into the back of the G4 . Then try to hook the scanner into the other side of the keyboard. I keep getting the error message that the scanner requires too much power for it to be hooked into that USB port. The hub is a piece of junk and is not working (microconnectors) and so is the USB to serial adapter. Any ideas?

First off, do not connect anything into your keyboard that will be draining a lot of power. Only connect those devices with their own power adapters (such as your printer). The serial adapter should be a low-power device as well, so you might be able to get away with that one too.

Also, is your hub powered or unpowered? Powered hubs will be much better to run the number of devices you are looking at. Non-powered hubs are much cheaper, but next to worthless.

Hope this helps.

I have a powered hub. It's weird. I can get my scanner to work through the hub now, but everytime I send a print to it, all of the lights shut off and the hub doesn't work until I restart the machine. Even after restart though, the hub will not let me print. It's like the printer is sending too much info. through it, and it shuts down every time. USB to serial still isn't recognizing the printer (Laserwriter IIg). ?????

I would first try downloading/installing the Mac OS 9.0.4 update to your machine (if you haven't already). It will have more up-to-date USB drivers. You may want to even turn off the Epson's USB extensions and letting the OS take over.

The other thing to try (even though it is a long shot with USB) is to try a different port. This solves a lot of issues on E-net hubs. If that does not take care of the problem, I would take the hub back and exchange it. See if the new unit works better. Self-powered hubs are not supposed to shut down from a print command. There is something going on there.

Hopefully these couple of ideas help out. Good luck!
