I've been considering getting a scanner, and I'm just wondering about your experiences with different scanner...
Basically its between the Agfa 1212U, Epson 610 and Microtek X6 or V6.
Taking into account software, what would you say is best? I've been recommended the Microtek by a friend who has used them all, but I would like to know from more than one person...
TIA

Avoid the Agfa scanner unless all you want to do is scan text. (The art lab at my university has several of these scanners.) These scanners are good for text but lousy for pictures.
As for the other scanners, I haven't used them so I can't reccomend anything.

I would recommend UMAX scanners. I have an Astra 4000U and it rocks! 1200x2400 optical resolution and very good color reproduction. It is around $350 though. The software is pretty good; not as good as LinoColor Elite but good nonetheless.

I agree with the above post about Umax! I have the 2100U and have never had any problems. Also, I think this question has been asked many times before so you may want to do a search!

I just bought the Agfa1212u from MacMall for only $65 with a $15 mail in rebate (which covered the s&h).. the image quality isn't the greatest I've seen, but it's still pretty good.. Software installation was a snap and went without a hitch. The ScanWise software is pretty good as well. Overall, I'm very pleased with the product, especially for the low price.. and don't forget the most important aspect, it comes in an iMac-like translucent plastic! haha..

I have an Epson Perfection 636U and have had great results with it. The Epson TWAIN is good; altough I've not yet figured out how to use the OCR software.

Thanks all for your replies!
I think I'll wait a while to get a scanner now...
I'll get another HD first and some speakers! Wait for cheap firewire scanners then get one.
Thanks again

i have an Agfa 1212U and its OK, but not great (maybe great for the price.) I really DONT like the Scanwise software. It has some strange relationship to Colorsync, and if your settings aren't perfect, you can get crashes and hangs.
I am actively looking for third party scanning software.

I've got a SnapScan 1212U, and the picture quality is pretty bad, and it's slow as molases (spelling ?). I only use it occasionally, which is good. It works for me, but if you want to use it everyday, you're going to hate it! I've also had problems with the ScanWise software, it's better now that I've got the latest version. Other than that, it's OK.
