I've narrowed down my inkjet purchase to these two printers. The Epson 870 seems to have fantastic photo abilities (by report) but is slow and doesn't do well with text.
The HP seems to be a better all around printer.
I have an old 300 dpi laserwriter which seems to do just fine for text, so I'm leaning towards the Epson to round out my system.
After a search I couldn't find any information on the Epson here. Does anyone have any experience with it?
Thanks

I don't know about the Epson 870, but I had an Epson 740, which I have replaced with an HP Deskjet 970Cse, and have not regretted it for a minute. It is faster, better and quieter. it does as good a job, maybe a little better, at high-quality photo prints and it doesn't suck ink like most Epson products seem to.
If you are going for great graphics, I don't think you should assume the Epson is better than the HP.
Hope this helps.

I agree, go with the HP, my 950C is pretty much, awesome, much better than my older epson stylus color 800... it seems more promising and all... photos are incredible, software is better, prints are much faster, etc...

Until the Epson 870 came out I was all set to go for the HP95x or HP970cxi. However, the 870 (which is new) is apparently just as quite and most seemed to be very impressed by the photo output.
That's why I'm not sure which way to go.
Thanks.

They both have excellent photo quality. The HP, however, can print at a higher resolution (2400x1200 vs 1440x720), so this is a plus. The HP also beats the epson on text, hands down, and also, HPs are more reliable than epsons. Epsons just seemed to break down a lot, several epson printers from school just were crazy, getting them to work was a pain. My epson had several problems itself, and finally died after a paper jam (a PAPER jam!)... The HPs also take a smaller footprint too, as it uses that weird rolling paper technique. I would get the HP rather than an epson..... so there....

Would this be the same Hewlett-Packard that withdrew Mac support completely from certain products not so long ago? I can't believe anybody even entertains the thought of HP printers anymore. Do you want to be left unsupported in three or six months time? Not to mention the fact that HP's have a horrible dither. You can spot HP printed stuff a mile away, blind man on a galloping horse sort of thing. Go with the Epson and hang onto the Laser for text. I've an Epson 750 a choice of lasers via PowerPrintUSB.(To be honest both lasers are old HP's!!!!!) I'm completely happy!
Well, I wish I had a bigger house, and a nicer car and maybe a boat but...
