I have just been shipped a QPS Que! 16x10x40 FireWire CD-RW. I am very satisfied with it except for one thing... When I go to Apple System Profiler it only identifys it as...

It dosen't identify the mechanism like my old 8x4x32 QPS Que! FireWire CD-RW! (by the way, my old 8x4x32 burner broke down) How can I find out the mechanism if Apple System Profiler can't identify it? Is Toast the only way? (haha, I'd hate to reboot now, I'm FTPing a lot of junk to a friend)

Well, I decided to boot back to 9 anyways... Both Toast and Apple System Profiler in 9 can't tell me the mechanism. Can anyone help?

If it did show up in the Profiler, it'd probably be ID'd as a QPCDRW161040FEM. The actual mech. is probably one of the following:
QPS Que! Fire 16x 10x 40x FireWire = Teac CD-W516EB Firmware 1.0A
QPS Que! Fire 16x 10x 40x FireWire = Plextor PX-W1610A Firmware 1.0
QPS Que! Fire 16x 10x 40x FireWire = Sanyo CRD-BP1500P Firmware 6.34

Knowing Que! they've probably used a custom firmware revision to remove the OEM vendor name of the drive itself from showing up, and all that the Apple system profiler is reporting is the QPS firewire bridge.

Anyway, Here's hoping you got the Teac or the Plextor, over the Sanyo!

So, it turns out I have a Teac mechanism. Thanks. But how did you know that specific model number would be a Teac and the other would be Plextor and Sanyo?

Not hard really.. I just checked Apple's own hardware compatibility charts, which lists the mechs.
