Is it okay the put my external firewire drives near my CRT monitor?

Al long time ago, I remember hearing about the 'Click of Death" that was affecting Imoega Zip drives. At the time it was suggested that magnetic fields from a monitor might have been damaging the drive mechanism.

Any truth to this in terms of full sized HD's?

I guess it can not be that bad… after all there are computers like the eMac wich have a hard disk near a CRT tube.

I have an external FireWire hard drive that i made/assembled myself and it sits beside my CRT.... been working fine for over 2 years already and counting.

I guess it helps that my hard drive's enclosure is one of those generic, all-aluminum ones from CompUSA... but i wouldn't know for sure.

And if you're as paranoid as me, it probably would be a good idea to -not- "degauss" your monitor while the external drive is near it..... i'm sure -that- has something to do with magnetism.....
