I am planning to get a CD/RW for my Power Book G4 and was wondering what others were useing and why.
I'm not overly concerned about portability, as much as performance , value and compatibility with apple's software.
so I thought the best way to decide is to see what others have gone for.
cheers in advance, Badger

I Got the VST CDRW Drive. It is nice and light and small. Apple Was bundling them with their G4 Powerbooks this summer. It's great. Powers off the powerbook through the firewire. It maTCHES THE TiG4.

i use an older lacie 8x4x24x CDRW. when i bought it about a year and a half ago it was on sale. i also considered that lacie offered local support in my city... which came in handy when my friend stepped on the drive (don't ask) and broke the tray. lacie repaired the drive the same day i dropped it off, for free even. the drive has decent performance, is compatible with itunes and iburner, and came with a great warranty. the moral of the story is that though you can certainly buy newer, faster drives these days, you shouldn't forget to consider what kind of warranty and service is offered with the hardware.

I've had two Yamaha's and I've been very pleased with both. (I only upgraded to get a faster drive.) I haven't had any trouble with either, so I can't say anything about support or repair time.
Do some searching through the older posts - this is a common question. You'll find lots of conflicting stories, unfortunately. There's always someone who had a bad time with something. It's hard to get anything statistically sound. But also try sites like epinions.com where you can at least get a larger sampling of opinions.

I have the imation 4x4x6 usb drive.
Why?
Because it was cheap ($380 AUS or under $200 US).
Its very stable - obviously its much slower than a firewire drive, but Im pleased to say it doesnt suffer from buffer errors or anything like that.
I recommend it fully to anyone who needs an inexpensive cdrw.
Now all we need is a full version of toast for osx.
