I am posting this for my aunt in hopes that fellow forum users will, as usual, come though. Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions.

Problem is we have a LaserWriter Select 360f which receives and prints
incoming faxes and takes outgoing faxes from the computer. Apple stopped
updating the printer/fax driver some time ago; so as the OS has been updated
the compatibility of the printer/fax driver hasn't kept up. Specifically, we
can't use OS 8.5 (we're still on 8.1) because the printer/fax won't function
with it. We have seen Apple tech docs which basically say they're no longer
supporting the 360f and provide some workarounds to various glitchy
things...but have never seen anything that can fix the basic incompatibility
of a G3 with OS 8.5.
As soon as someone comes out with a laser printer/fax that's mac compatible,
we'll replace the laserwriter 360f with it & then be able to upgrade to OS
8.5+. HP and Brother and a few others offer that type of printer with pc
compatibility, but nothing yet that I'm aware of for the Mac. Wish I knew
how long we'll have to wait; if it's a few months, fine, but if it's a year
or more, we may not be willing to wait that long to upgrade the OS.
Our alternatives are to either break down and get fax machine or to dedicate
an old laptop to be a fax server, whereby our computers tie into it via
ethernet and it's connected to both a printer and a fax modem so our
computers can send outgoing faxes thru it & it can receive and print
incoming faxes. Either alternative is cumbersome and costly, so we'll hold
out as long as we can.
