Hi,

Should this be -- my new external LaCie Firewire HD continuously sounds like a train going through a tunnel (ok, not that bad but very very annoying)even when no reading or writing is going on. I expected it to be dead quiet except when it was in use.

Am I expecting too much?

Is there some sort of quiet/sleep mode it can be put into?

It is fairly quite when you put it back in the box and return it.
LaCie's doesn't seem to care about loud fans and noise.

most drives with fans are pretty noisy, I have a Sarotech Flexx case, it's not to noisy, well my G4 is noisier. if you want really silent get one of the clearlight 2.5'' drives they are nice.
