I am looking for a scanner (USB), but don't want to spend more that $300-$400. I am looking for the highest resolution possible, as I want to enlarge photos. I understand that using negatives or slides requires a really high res scanner with a special adaptor, or a slide scanner. I do however, wnat to be able to scan in other things as well. Any suggestions?

I would look at Epson and Microtek. I myself was looking at one of the SlimScan series scanners but I don't think that it will do as much as you want it to do.

Look no farther than the <a href="http://www.buy.com/comp/product.asp?sku=10158756">UMAX Astra 2100U</a>

$127.95 from www.BuyComp.com
-$50 <a href="http://www.driveoldsmobile.com/oldsmobile.asp?page=buycom">Buy.com GC</a> (FREE for testing driving an Oldsmobile car)
------
$77.95 (plus tax/shipping)

NOTE: In all the "Test Drive for FREE GCs" offers I have ever done they have never asked me for identification (assuming you look older than 18, 21, or 25 whichever age the offer specifies), and best yet I have never had to actually test drive a car. I'm just honest with them asking them to sign the form and they do it within seconds. Can you say $50 FREE in a matter of 50 seconds or less?

Don't forget to check the various PC scanners. They tend to be cheaper and they will work with the Mac if a driver is available. I picked up an Acer scanner (36bit color, 9600 x 9600 DPI, no transparency adapter though) for $49 after rebate at OfficeMax. The Mac driver from their web site (MiraScan) works great. You just don't get the bonus software but if you have Photoshop or ColorIt, who needs it.
Good luck
