My brother is looking to purchase a 60GB or larger FireWire HD for DV editing. Can anyone recommend a good brand?

LaCie always seem okay to me. Also most people speak quite highly of the Maxtor 80GB drive.

I have been very pleased with the OWC Mercury Elite Pro FireWire 75GB drive I got from macsales.com.

It uses the IBM Deskstar 75GXP mechanism and the new Oxford 911 chipset.

I'll second the LaCie vote. They also use the IBM Deskstar series. I believe that they are starting to ship with the Oxford 911 chipset also, but you may want to verify that with them.

Whatever you decide, you want a drive with that chipset. I increases the speed of drive from 12-14MB/s to around 35MB/s for about the same price as the original drives.

Stay away from Lacie, unless you live or work in an industrial park and can deal with the noise. I swear, it is so incredibly loud it's unbelievable. BTW, they no longer use Deskstars exclusively (I believe the 75 gig is a deskstar, but mine is definately a Quantum Fireball 7200RPM. You can get case kits on the cheap from OWC with the new bridge chip, and put a drive in yourself - this would be the best deal. The Maxtors had early problems (trace the threads on MacFixit, but maybe they're fixed now) - they are silent.
Other than the noise, though, the Lacie is a solid performer, with good software and excellent support .
