NEWS from RCA
1/28/2000 RCA-Thomson called and stated that they now have a USB Twain source for that the CDS1000 it can be downloaded at their web site. However the MAC Serial Driver is not yet available. They plan to post that by February 4th.

Home Shopping Network has been selling a RCA CDS1000 Digital Camera stating that it will work on both Windows 95/98 & Macintosh (PM w/sys 7.5+) 480X640 with auto flash 2mg storage and is complete with cables and software. Not so! Last week I purchased the camera and found that the software is not supported. Nor does it work on system 8.5 running on a G3 upgraded PM7500, or system 9.0 running on B/W G3. The literature that is supplied has only one mention of a "how to" and that is irrelevant to most Mac users because they know about the command key opposed to the control key for functions. In speaking to RCA/Thomson Direct, they have no support for Mac other than to suggest downloading a patch for the other RCA camera they sell. This patch does not work either, don't waste your time). RCA/Thomson Direct were very polite, but unable to answer questions about Mac’s. They stated they would e-mail their supervisor(s). WOW!

I tried to contact HSN regarding this matter and after constantly being put on hold waiting, I am then transferred to "all lines are busy, please try later, we're open 24 hours message (I tried 23 times!). I attempted to let them know of the problem...

I finally got back with Thomson Direct and they believe that HSN released them prior to having the software available they went on to stated that a patch would be available on disk and would be mailed to my address, I requested the patch be email to me. Note: date of manufacture 5/99, the written material and packaging all state that the product is Macintosh compliant).

Final notes, the software MGI PhotoSuite SE v1.0.1b5 5/10/98 is not supported on MGI's website either but it seems to work ok on both systems it just can't communicate to the camera, nor does PhotoShop or CorelPhoto8, it's a twain thing! For the price (HSN $129/149+shipping), the camera might be a great value when they get the bugs worked out.

Further note: I have tested this on 2 G3's B/W G3/400 and an upgraded 7500/G3 250. Both with no results. However using a microtek V600 scanner (SCSI) It has failed to work ever since I install the RCA Twain Source. Any ideas and could this cause damage????
