I have been waiting for the driver for my HP 694C deskjet which doesn't seems to be forthcoming. I have OS 9 sitting on my desk and have not install it because the printer will not run under that system. I decided to purchase a new printer and at first I was thinking about the Epson 740i. But now I am thinking about just getting a laser printer and have been looking at the 5700i. When the driver for the HP is finally released I will have my color print option back. With the laser I will have a better quality print, not that I need it too often, but high quility needs do come up from time to time. I figure instead of spending the money and end up with two color printers I'd just spend a little more and get a laser. I'd like to know of any experiences people have had or perhaps an alternative printer or idea.

Can you get a hold of the PowerPrint drivers? These work with the 694.

It comes with a USB-Parallel adapter, but the drivers should work with a serial port as well.

If you could find a used older version, it would probably work fine.

On the issue of PowerPrint: PowerPrint v.5 works for more priners than PowerPrint v.4.5

On the issue of Epson EPL5700i: I have one and I really love it. Printer drivers work great, the printer is fast and it comes with a $50 rebate. I was contemplating the same between this Epson, Brother HL-1240 (laser) and HP's DeskJet 970 which does color and duplex printing. After looking at things I do, I realized that color printing is a want, not a need so I went with Epson because it was a known brand and RAM is upgradable. Of course, my situation may be different from yours given that I also have two color printers in my office and I work less than 5 minutes from where I live...

OK, I like the power print option. I checked out the page and v5 does support my printer. But, does it work on OS9? I really need to know before I fork out $100 for PowerPrint.

I´m using PowerPrint 3.0.4 under MacOS9.0 in a PBG3/233 (second generatin) for about two monts. Everything is fine except that, for some Epson printers such as the 1520, I have to send the print job twice and then cancel the second one. Not much of a problem, though.

In response to my own question, yes PowerPrint does support 694C under OS9. I emailed the company and had it comfirmed. I will probably get the laser at a latter date.

I've a Rev/A iMac and an epson 740 printer, which worked fine together for a long time, even after I installed OS 9. Problems began when I briefly disconnected the printer from the USB port. Now, although I can see the SC 740 icon in the chooser, no printer port options appear when I select it. The computer finds no USB port through which to communicate with the printer. It's driving me crazy. I've uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, even tried using the recently recalled driver from Epson, which made not difference as far as I could tell. I have not installed the 740 serial port drivers accidentally; I'm quite sure of this. If anyone has any notion of what's gone wrong I'd be most grateful for the help. I do like this printer when it works.
