SoundSticks buzzing problem

I'm using some brand new SoundSticks on an LCD iMac running Mac OS X 10.1.4, and quite often I get a nasty buzzing sound in the right channel of the soundsticks.
Initially I thought I might have a blown speaker, but I swapped the right/left speaker connectors at the Y plug on the bass unit, and then the problem appeared in the left speaker instead of the right. So that rules out a blown speaker -- something is getting mucked up
If I turn the sound way down, then there is no problem, but anything over 1/4 volume, and I get a really nasty buzzing sound. The weird thing is, this doesn't _always_ happen -- I sometimes get extremely clear, loud sound out of the speakers.
The only other USB peripherals I have hooked up are my keyboard/mouse and the Canon 1240u Canoscan scanner (w/beta drivers). I'm going to try shuffling the USB peripherals around a bit, and unplugging the scanner, to see if it helps anything.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try going into iTunes preferences, effects tab. Turn off the sound enhancer. I had the same problem and it seems the sounds enhancer clips the speakers causing them to buzz. It took me a while to figure that out. Also, make sure your EQ dB range isn't above 0. Of course this will resolve buzzing issues in iTunes, but not other sounds. If the speakers buzz outside of iTunes at 1/4 level, then you may have bad amplification in your sub (thats where the amp is). Good luck.

Even with everything off, after playing loud music for a minute or two, it starts buzzing like crazy. *sigh*
