Hi,

I have an ongoing problem with my Brother MFC 420CN. For the first 6 weeks or so it printed without a problem and then it would begin to process a printing job but seem to hang at that point without printing. I would have to restart the computer and the problem would go away for a while and then start again. Over the several months I have had it, the time between restarts has been dropping until it really doesn't print much now. I have been in touch with Brother and they seem at a loss as to why it is happening. I trashed the other print drivers in case there was a conflict and reinstalled the printer driver. Their most recent advice was the use a third party program to reset the printer and restart, which I did. It didn't work.
My setup is as follows. My eMac, using 10.2.8 where the problem is occuring, is connected to a D-Link router. The Brother MFC is connected to the router by ethernet cable and the router is connected by ethernet cable to the eMac. I changed the cable linking the MFC to the router in case it was a bad cable but that wasn't the problem. I might suspect the router but the connection to the MFC scanner option and the remote ink level indicator work without a problem. Also I can connect to the MFC wirelessly through the router from my iBook and print without a problem-so far. I have reached the point where I can't seen what the problem can be. I bought this product because it was supposed to be networkable and it is - except for the ability to print from my eMac. Anyone ever have the same problem?

P.S. Just an update. I continued to have problems of the MFC printing. Again the printing started to process and then hung. I connected the printer ethernet cable directly to the eMac and tried to print again. It printed without a problem. I reconnected the cable back to my router and was able to print just as easily- for now. My question now is, if there is an issue concerning the router, why does it print at times and not at others? Also, if this MFC is supposed to be networkable, wasn't it designed to be used with a router?

1. unplug a extra usb stuff, it failed to install properly with my usb hub plugged in?
2. I downloaded the cups drivers and set it up with thouse abit foggy where I go them but the network works fine. If you cant find them on the web I'll email them to you 6mb oswaldkelso@hotmail.com

The DMZ on my router only mentions computers not printers.

oswaldkelso, I'm using , or trying to use an ethernet network. The tech rep at Brother is stumped with what could be causing the problem

A further update. My MFC is still hanging when it starts printing. I have found I just have to disconnect and reconnect the ethernet cable that goes from the computer to the router to get it to start printing again. The MFC don't have to be disconnected to the router.
A funny thought has occurred to me. Before the Brother MFC I had an HP printer connected directly to my eMac using a USB cable and I had the same sort of problem. Every so often the HP printer wouldn't print and I found I had to disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to get it to print. Any ideas as what could be causing this?
