This always applied to the iPOD. Furthermore, manufacturers that sell in the UK, must offer a repair service for their products for at least five years after the date on sale.
The other good news is that from January 2002, a EU law now stipulates that all computer equipment (including peripherals) now have a two-year guarantee against component failure/defect, which the manufacturer must comply with if their product is sold within the EU. It makes things a little interesting for the choice whether to buy AppleCare. If only the EU could get car prices sorted out, but we'll have to wait 'til 2005 for that
