With the recent preview release of QuickTime 6, which states that it can playback AAC, a new audio format that has higher quality and a smaller size than "older" formats like MP3, do you think we may see a software update in the near future that will upgrade the capabilities of our beloved iPod?

Does iPod play .wav, .aiff, and other QuickTime-supported files currently? If so, then I'd say that's a pretty sure bet...

Yes, I believe the iPod does play both .aiff and .wav files in addition to .mp3. While the thought of converting over 8GB of mp3s to AAC doesn't sound appealing, it may be worth it. We'll see.

If my 5 Gig iPod can now hold 1500-2000 songs instead of 1000, then it is well worth the reencoding work.

the iPod tech specs page says that it has upgradable firmware to "support future music formats". Since QT6 was in the works when iPod was released, I'm betting that they are planning on it.

i'm pretty sure recoding your mp3s to aac wouldnt do much since the quality is already set. Is aac really that good of a quality? any audiophiles in here?

But i think the real point of it is not really the audio quality - face it, it's not like people use an iPod in optimum conditions.....the extra songs in the same drive space without loss of quality it what's to get excited about.
