My HP 970cse refuses to print from any Mac (iMac, powerbook, G4) with any OS (8.6, 9.1, X) with any driver (exception: generic driver in X will print , but only half page, then gibberish). I get an error saying it can't read the ink levels from the cartridges so I should install the proper cartridges. They are new cartridges, and they are the authentic HP cartridge intended for this printer.
It works flawlessly from a PC using the parallel port. I can even check the ink levels from the HP Utility.
The only advice I get from HP is to clean the print heads and the contacts.

Well obviously it is a USB problem... perhaps the USB cable itself has issues, one of my printers had a bad serial cable which gave it problems... might want to look into it...

I tried two different cables. Each would print flawlessly to an HP 840c, but not to the 970cse.
I do think it is a USB issue, but it may be in the printer itself...

My HP-970cxi runs flawlessly with USB under my iMac's OS-8.6 and Pismo's OS-9.0.4.
Yeah, it sounds like a USB problem to me too; but it could be a software issue. Reboot, reinstall the HP printer driver, go to HP's website and download (or make sure your have) the most recent version. Try once more to print.
If still no USB success--ask HP for a replacement under the warranty.
Good Luck, T.

I've seen a lot of defective HP software (they don't seem to try too hard with Mac software) but never defective HP hardware. You may have the first, unfortunately. When you do get a replacement you can be confident that it will work reliably.

I've got the same printer with an iMac. Works just fine. Also, I recently downloaded their latest driver and it works fine as well. I'm running through a Dr. Bott USB hub. Your printer may be faulty, but it's most likely corrupted software somewhere.
