im a photographer that didnt want to be left behind the digital stampede and wanted to a) buy my first computer and b) set up a introductory digital "white"-room. if i where a seagull interested in digital imaging i would be so fat from the myriads of herrings available. but taking the plunge i tried to compile a well balanced system. canon fs 2710 film scanner - orangemicro scsi to firewire adaptor - imac dv 400 - photoshop 6 - epson 1270. ive seen more dawns than farmers but have finally worked out all the right settings, profiles in place with a good workflow. MY PROBLEM is that im not sure of the quality of my scans. ive checked the slides and conventionally printed them to make sure but my scans (from 25mb to 150mb) are generally way darker than they should be, poor shadow detail and more noise than i feel acceptable, generally requiring lots of edting for no great results. am i pushing too much of an envelope in terms of data transfer from scsi to firewire. could there be interferance of an electrical nature (eg how much space is reasonable isolation). how do check my scanners performance to ascertain what is reasonable given that the chaps at tech support at canon are none too helpfull as they view scsi to firewire as non kosher. all i want to do is print . ive stacks of images and limited finances and will offer free prints of unnattractive nudes to anyone who can help.
