Hi Macnners:

i'm looking for a large format scanner, firewire if possible.

i'm looking to scan many 11x17 drawings.

To use my old La Cie Silverscanner III, i need to scan half a drawing, flip it, scan it again, then stitch it together in photoshop. it's time consuming.

my primary use is for the web; 72 -96 dpi. But normally i scan larger, say, 300 dpi, for other uses, such as postcards or promotional pieces, then scale the images with a script.

Any scanner recommendations?

I've heard of the UMAX POWERLOOK 2100XL LARGE FORMAT SCANNER at $1,199.00. It's pricy. Don't want to spend any more than that; I'm not a service bureau.

My G4 can use SCSI (Adaptec 2930), USB or firewire; I prefer firewire for speed, but I haven't found any large format firewire scanners.

Any experience or advice with this scanner?

Thank you in advance.

Large format Firewire scanners are as scarce as hen's teeth.

Alternative: for your budget, you can get an excellent digital camera with Firewire capabilities, some lights and a tripod if all you need is Web quality. The bonus will be that you gain a regular camera in the process and be able to preview your "scans" before you have to import them to the mac.

A digital camera for under $1200 with a firewire connector? Which one?

my new Umax Powerlook 2100 XL 11" x 14" scanner arrived a few days ago; it was recognized by my mac on the scsi chain.

i tried several scans; but they all failed. when scanning a white piece of paper, the scan shows a bunch of crazy colors, with two vertical stripes extending the height of the image at positions 1/3 and 2/3 of the way horizontally across the image.

the scanner is absolutely unusable.

i tried it on my PC, with a different scsi card, different scsi cable. same problem.

i'm going to return it and try again.

i ordered another powerlook; it arrived today. tested it on my PC; it worked. tested it on my mac at the end of a scsi chain with a hard drive, cd-rw, and a slide scanner. the mac couldn't recognize it.

i changed the scsi ID from 3 to 5; now it works.

at last.

the initial scan into photoshop was weak; the highlights of a watercolor on white paper were washed out. but selecting the binuscan option resulted in an excellent scan, with no manual tweaking.

bye bye la cie silverscanner III.
