yes, another speaker thread

am looking for speakers for my bedroom...to hook up to a powerbook (thru an airport express);

narrowed it down (i think) to these:

klipsch promedia ultra 2.0

jbl creatures ll

both under $100, both have good reviews.

any personal thoughts here, anyone?

thanks!

The jbl creatures look kinda neat, but the crossover problem inherent in every satellite system is taken to an appalling extreme here:

The mids are non-existent. You've got ouch-crisp highs and blah-boom bass, but forget acoustic guitars - you won't hear them in a mix.

Pretty, but a total waste of money, IMO.

On the other hand Klipsch speakers have a reputation for being rather good.

What nJm said.

I haven't heard the Promedia 2.0s but the Creature IIs sound bad, I would recommend against them.

i have a music biz friend who has the jbl's in his office, loves them.

both speakers have good reviews.
ilounge loves the jbls.

on amazon, both get raves (and dislikes, of course).

may actually try to go somewhere and HEAR them.

does anyone here HAVE the klipsch speakers?

I worked at an Apple Store last summer, and had the fortunate experience of hearing all our speakers being turned up to the max everyday, afterwhich I concluded the klipsch we had basically blew the other speakers out of the water. The JBLs are really clear (almost too clear?), but their dynamics aren't so good, and they don't get very loud.

However, with the Klipsch, you've got a nice midsized woofer that can pump out the majority of frequencies we can hear. If you can afford them, I'd try to step up to the ProMedia 2.1s, or at least the GMX 2.1s, since the bass is actually really good on those.

People there rave about the Logitech Z-2300 2.1 THX certified speakers too, but those sound almost as bad as the Creatures IMHO.

yeah, i know that buying based on amazon reviews (or any other "public" reviews) is NOT the way to go..just a way to get some perspective.

thanks,
will probably go with the klipsch!
