I am a college student and I do not have a TV in my dorm. I will be getting a new iMac in August, just in time for next year. In case they do not put a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive in the machines unvieled at MWNY, I would like to watch my DVDs if possible. Does anyone know of any reasonably priced external firewire DVD players that could hook upto an iMac??
Fantom drives make an excellent quality, reasonably price external dvd player. www.fantomdrives.com have the 360203-FW-M - external firewire dvd rom drive for $289 US - not bad for what it is. They have a good rep too.
just look under the firewire drives section, not the dvd drives section; with any modern mac with ati rage pro video or better and i-movie & quicktime, youll have no trouble running dvds at all. (the other ones include an mpeg2 card which you probably dont need).
I believe some of the other major manufacturers like que and lacie do them as well, but i havent checked out the price.
