Hello peoples.
So here's what I want to do. I have a G4/466 with the built-in CD-RW, but what I would really like before I head off to university is a DVD drive. So, looking at my options; I can take out my CD-RW and slap in a DVD drive in its place. Problems; I still want my CD-RW, and since it's already in my machine I see no point in removing it. Plus, do DVD drives need any special drivers or anything? Am I out of luck looking at one of the ubiquitous Sony or Panasonic DVD drives on the market for PCs right now if they don't have drivers? Or are there generic Apple drivers that I can use? For that matter, do I need drivers at all, or will it just work? OK, that's that...so moving on. Could I build an external enclosure for a DVD drive out of wood or something, and then put the DVD drive in the enclosure, buy an ATA extender cable, and string that through? Would that potentially cause me problems?
You can probably see where my questions are leading. Number one: can I use a generic PC DVD drive? Number two: can I keep the DVD drive outside of the computer safely, or will that cause problems?
Any suggestions? Thanks for any light you can shed on this subject.
