A little problem here.
I have an Ezquest Boa 12x cd burner, external firewire. Sometimes my PMG4 450 Mhz DP refuses to find it. I have toast version 5 and what ever I do it can't find it. I already updated firmware according to software update but nothing happened.
Any thoughts?

I've got a very similar problem myself. My burner is a Que! 8x4x32 with a Plextor mechanism, and I'm using a G4 450MP with 128MB RAM. I can't get the thing to show up for anything. Apple System Profiler won't see it in 9.1 or OS X. I've tried multiple extension sets in 9.1, including the base set. Most importantly though is the fact that ASP wont see it in 9.1 OR X. I definitely don't think it's any kind of extension type problem. Unfortunately, I don't have any other firewire devices, so I can't tell if my computer can see anything on the firewire bus.

Any suggestions anyone?

I probably should mention that sometimes (1 out of 10 times) the drive shows up in system profiler but then I can't make anything out of the letters that come with it. the stranger thing is though, that even though it shows up in the profiler it won't come up in toast...
any thoughts?

maybe it's just that time of the month

nobody seems to have an answer. Maybe I'm having the same problem as in THIS thread????
I'd hate to have to call the service here because they are really bad and it also costs a lot. Stupid Mac Service in Iceland.

Dangit! I came to the "Peripherals" section to post on this very same subject, and no one has the answer! I have the Iomega Zip CD 650 with Toast 4.1.2, and all of the sudden, Toast won't recognize the burner. I've reinstalled Toast three times, and the same result occurs. I have burned several data and audio CD's with the same burner and software, but suddenly it's gone.
What's weird is that if I insert a CD that has content on it into the Zip CD, the icon shows up on the desktop. So, I know my Mac knows it's there...Toast just won't recognize it.

I immediately went to Roxio.com (the new name for the makers of Toast), and this is what they had to say:

If you are using Toast 4.1.2 under Mac OS 9 with a supported USB recorder and Toast doesn't see the recorder, then:

A. Start the computer with the USB recorder powered off or disconnected from the USB port on your Mac
B. When the computer is finished booting launch Toast
C. Turn on the USB recorder on or plug it in to the USB port on your Mac
D. The recorder should now be seen by Toast

If your USB recorder is still not seen, then will need to test with only the standard Mac OS and Toast extensions loaded. You can do this by using the "Extensions Manager" control panel:

A. Open "Extensions Manager" control panel
B. Select "Mac OS 9 All" from the "Selected Set" pop-up menu
C. Select "Duplicate Set" from the "File" menu
D. Name the new set "Toast"
E. Select "as Packages" from the "View" menu
F. Locate the "Toast CD Recording Software" package and put a check in the box for this package
G. Close the "Extensions Manager" control panel
H. Restart your Mac

4. If after updating to Toast 4.1.2 you are no longer able to see your FireWire CD Recorder in Toast, then you most likely have an Extension conflict. When you were using your FireWire CD Recorder with older versions of Toast you had to have a SIM Extension (an Extension that makes your FireWire CD Recorder look like a SCSI CD Recorder) installed in order for Toast to see the drive. Now that Toast supports FireWire CD Recorders with its own FireWire Extension, the old SIM Extension will cause problems. In order for Toast to function properly the old SIM Extension(s) will need to be disabled and the computer restarted.
This may or may not help here, but that's what I found as an issue with Toast. Also, there's a Toast 4.1.3 update that I downloaded, too.

I'm using Toast 5.01 and I already had tried similar instructions. What I did was to deactivate the authoring extensions and viola!!!!
What no doesn' t work is the burner itself. It stalls after I press burn in Toast. It gives the message writing and the time but then just stops.

Ok. I did discover some extensions conflicts last night, as well. I knew that Toast and iTunes were the only apps using the burner, so I messed around with the iTunes extensions, and that worked. Now the burner is recognized, and it also cleared up a strange driver problem with my FaxSTF program too. I just made a "Toast" extension set, which was basically just like before, only without any iTunes stuff.

If you are using OS 9.1, iTunes, and Toast, you need to disable the Apple Firewire Authoring Support, and Apple USB Authoring Support extensions. I have Toast 5.0.1, but I think it's the same for 4.1.2 and 4.1.3.
