Does anyone know why Apple doesn't offer a 17" flat panel display? I plan buying a G4 in the fall and I want a 17" preferable a flat panel. I like the way Apple displays look plus I like the one cable idea.

i dont know why, but it seems as if apple is moving more and more towards flat panels... i also hope that they do release a 17inch flat panel for $999 (or something close) and drop the 15 inch model. that would be perfect for all cube users

From Mac OS Rumors ( www.macosrumors.com ) :
"According to Apple sources, a big shakeup is in the pipeline for its display line; first, the company plans to replace the 22-inch flat panel LCD in its Cinema Display with a 24-inch model that will increase resolution and widen the screen by an inch on either side. Vertical resolution will remain at 1200 pixels, but horizontal rez could be as much as 2048 pixels depending on which version of the LCD Apple elects to use (two are currently in testing, one at 1920 pixels wide, another at 2048).
From this upscale move (which may not come for up to six months, as Apple wants to introduce this new Cinema at the display's existing $2999 US price point -- the 2048-pixel version described above would cost Apple $5,000 today, just for the LCD itself!), Apple will add a $1999 20-inch flat panel, a $1199 17.8-inch model, and the existing 15-inch version would drop to around $599.
Apple sees Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) displays, until recently the bread and butter of the industry, as on their way out. 2001 is expected to see dramatic price drops in flat panel LCD prices, and new technologies like Light Emitting Polymer are expected to bring the flat-panel to consumer pricing and even thinner form factors in 2002 and beyond. But until then, the existing 17-in. Studio Display CRT will remain in the line-up as an option for those who want a better price-to-size/resolution ratio, and should drop in price again mid-year."
Perhaps we'll see something at MWNY? I would be happy if they re-introduced the 21" CRT Studio Display, in any event.

Didn't Steve Jobs, in his MWT or maybe even MYSF say something to the effect of that the Cinema Display was going to a new lower price and "we hope to bring you price cuts in the future" or something like that?
The instant I heard that I realized that he might be alluding to either new LCD's or new/larger LCD's which would make the price cuts logical.
Even though the 15" display is "small", I still drool over it as it looks 100% better than any of the 10 15" PeeCee displays that you can get for more or a few hundred less.

I just got a new Samsung SyncMaster 170T 17” flat panel display for my G4/733. It's really spectacular! It displays more (1280x1024) than my previous 20” Apple monitor. It is much crisper and brighter. It comes with digital and analog interfaces. I’m using the digital interface with an ADC to DVI adapter. Cost was approx. $1200.
Apple will probably come out with a 17” flat panel this year, but this one couldn’t be much better. It’s silver and grey and matches the G4 almost exactly.
