I have a mac with a 6GB HD and i would like to partition it into a ±500 and a ±5,5 GB partition. I will format the first one in HFS+ to install OS8 on it but I would like to know if it is possible to format the other partition to something else like XFS or another journaling file system. Or do I have to have 2 HFS+ partitions ?

OS 8? Wow. That goes back 4 years.

Anyway--no, you cannot have formats other than HFS or HFS+ and expect it to be readable by the Mac OS. If you want to install Linux, you could format for Linux, as it requires something other than HFS or HFS+.

OS X also supports another format (I forget what it's called), but OS 8 certainly won't like it.

Yes, i'm aware of the fact that OS8 is HFS/HFS+ only but that would only be for the small partition with OS8.1 on it. I would like to install Mandrake linux on the big partition with and XFS (or similar) filesystem. OS8.1 will be the secondary OS and it will have no need to access the other partition? So is it possible to have 2 partitions with 2 different file systems?

Yes, what you're looking to do is possible.

yep, like I was saying.

I ran Linux on my powerbook 292 a couple years ago and had to partition and format. One was HFS+ for OS 8.1 or 9 (don't remember), and the second was whatever Linux PPC wanted. It ran fine and dual-booted fine.
