Hi,

I have an iMac G3 running OS 8.6. I hooked up a USB Logitech two button + scroll wheel optical mouse and it works great, so much more comfortable than the round one! However, as I figured, the scroll wheel does not work. Is there any way I can get it working?

On a less important note, is there any way to configure the buttons? They all do the same function, again like I guessed.

I guess the "USB OverDrive" shareware app could help you, it is like using an original device driver but better.

Here is the creator' site:
http://www.usboverdrive.com/USBOverd...formation.html

link to an old version aimed to work with 'old' Mac OS, it says works better with Mac OS 9

http://www.senlick.com/html/01.01.html

so, if by any reason that version doesn't like 8.6 here is a link to an older USB OverDrive version:

I have downloaded the 1.3.7 version just to see what kind of info it has… an extract from the read me file…

The USB Overdrive is a universal USB driver that handles all USB mice, trackballs, joysticks and gamepads from any manufacturer and lets you configure them either globally or on an application-specific basis.

The mouse settings allow you to speed up your daily tasks by assigning useful actions to all the extra buttons and wheels in your USB mouse. You’ll typically want to assign a control-click to the right button for easy contextual menu acces, and enable document scrolling if your mouse has a scrolling wheel.

The Control Panel includes an active help feature that explains each command and option as you move the cursor around.

• System requirements

The USB Overdrive will run on any USB Mac running Mac OS 8.5 or later, but all Mac users should make sure that their firmware and system software is up to date.

Firmware Updates such as the iMac Firmware Update and G3 Firmware Update should always be installed.

Mac OS ROM Updates may no longer be needed after a full system software update. For example, the Mac OS ROM Update 1.0 is useful under Mac OS 8.6 if the version of your Mac OS ROM file (inside the System folder) is earlier than 1.6, but should not be installed under Mac OS 9 or if the version of your Mac OS ROM file is greater than 1.6.

The iMac Update 1.1 was only required for Mac OS 8.5 and 8.5.1 and should no longer be needed under Mac OS 8.6 or later.

• Installation

The USB Overdrive Installer installs the following files:
- USB Overdrive control panel in the Control Panels folder;
- USB Mouse Overdrive extension in the Extensions folder;
- USB Joystick Overdrive extension in the Extensions folder.

The two extensions are disabled by default and only become active if you select one of the "Use Custom Drivers" options in the control panel’s Options menu (see below for more info). When disabled, the icons change from the standard USB driver icon to a generic extension icon and the extensions themselves are never loaded by the Mac OS. There is no need to manually remove them from the Extensions folder.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the post. But when I try to use Stuffit on that program, the machine crashes. I know very little of Macs. Is there any way around this?

Weird, maybe there is some incompability or extensions conflict between your stuffit expander version and that Mac OS 8.6.

Anyway, let me know a mail where I can send the file to you, I have donwloaded both, 1.3.7 & 1.4 version and compressed them as .sea file. That is a self extracting archive, so you don't have to deal with stuffit, just do a double click on such files and you get them.

If you don't want to write here your mail to avoid spam and so, send me a private.

The files are small, about 330 KB each one.

BTW, which stuffit version are your running?. 7.0.3 is the newest version you can run under Mac OS 8.6, I have no issues with stuffit expander 6 under Mac OS 9.2

but again, feel free to send me a mail so I can send you the USB Overdrive files.
