Can anyone reccomend a good Ink Jet printer in the 150-300$ price range? I would like to use it to print out some digital pictures, but mostly for text and web pages. I have been looking at the HP 970 and 960 (b/w 250-300$) and am wondering if that is overkill for my needs. There are so many epsons out there i dont even know where to start. Please help!

I always go Epson. HP is good, but I really like Epson, and their Mac support is great. My suggestion would be the Epson Stylus Photo 780 for $199. I know your main use won't be photos, but when you do print pictures, this will do them better than a regular printer. A photo printer will do all of your regular printing needs just like any other printer.

When you do print pictures, there are 2 things to remember. Dpi and paper. Most cameras have pictures at 72 dpi. Not good. When I print pictures from my digital camera, I use Photoshop to change it to 300 dpi then it looks great. If you're scanning pictures yourself, scan at no less than 300. Second is paper. Premium Photo Paper is a must. I only use the Kodak High Gloss Premium paper. You can't tell the difference from that and a developed picture with the naked eye.

One other thing you might want to consider in the scheme of things is the cost of consumables... check to see how much cartridges are going for and also if third parties make compatible cartridges... i know that a number of the Epson have inexpensive 3rd party cartridges (where you can get a six pack for $39)... a great resource for reviews on printers is CNET http://www.cnet.com . and click on hardware, then printers. They have a team that reviews the printers based on their criteria, but even more telling are the mini reviews that actual users post and rate the machines...
good luck,
dave

I personally stick with the Epsons, even refurbished ones if you can find them, because Epson usually sells them with the full 1 year warranty (I know that Staples on-line store just had the Espon Stylus 900 for under $100 - which is normally a $300 printer)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Staples.com offers the refurbished Epson Stylus Color 900 inkjet printer (#445873) for $99.98, as a reader notes. With free shipping, it's the lowest total price we've seen. Add any item to your shopping cart in order to bring the total over $100 and apply a $20 discount, if still available to you. Features include 1440x720 dpi, 12 ppm black, 10 ppm color, USB/Parallel/Serial connectivity, and one-year manufacturer warranty. http://www.staples.com

Costco sells two packs of ink for every recent Epson and HP model at the best prices I've seen for real Epson and HP brand ink. Don't know about Sam's Club, but they usually "me too" anything Costco does.

I have an HP 970 and couldn't be happier. I recommend it not only for print and image quality (many reviews have rated it the best in class) but especially for the automatic double-sided printing, which is a great time-saver.

I have an Epson Stylus Color 740, and it's great. Earlier posts about cheap ink are true. www.ink4art.com has some GREAT deals. As for the printer, it's very fast and reliable. The quality is very good as well. At full resolution on that glossy photo-quality paper, this printer is STUNNING. Like most reviewers you'll find (Macworld, Macaddict, Cnet, etc), I agree that Epson is great. Once, I bought an HP printer, and had lots of problems with it, but that was years ago, so I won't use it to talk about any modern HP products.

If you are interested in an Epson, they have great prices on them at the Epson store (if you don't mind refurbs... they come with a full one year warranty)... http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/S...&oid=-8272 ... I believe the 740 is around $50....
best of luck,
dave
