What would be the most environmentally responsible way to dispose of useless CDs, y'kno.. .the AOL's and the coasters that we burn.

Use em as coasters or hang them off your rear view mirror.
You know: Reduce, REUSE, recycle.

Or you can try taking them to the same place you take used batteries.

well they are plastic, so you may be able to take them to your local recycling center and ask, I am sure that they would take them.

The recycling center here takes them. I imagine most would.

Read a cool idea recently (I think in Backpacker magazine): Use it as a signaling device (if you are hiking and need help, e.g.). Look through the hole to easily direct the flash of light at your intended target (airplane) so they know where you are, approximately

They also make for cute Christmas tree ornaments... along side with the 1, 2, & 4 MB SIMMS dangling and spinning around on the tree

My idea a while back was to keep them until I had enough to cover my car, then melt them on with a heat gun. You'd blind everyone on a sunny day, though.

I really do wish AOL would give it up, though. I've got Road Runner cable modem service, which is Time Warner, part of AOL/Time Wrner, and they still send me AOL disks. Like I'm gonna ditch cable and go back to a 56k modem just for their goofy "content?"

NOT! The durn DVD cases take up a lot more room in the trash, though, and I don't have a clue what to do with them, either.

What you need:
1. Microwave
2. AOL CD's (any amount will do)

Directions:
1. Place 1 AOL CD with label up in microwave.
2. Set microwave for 5 seconds.
3. Press Start.
4. Watch the light show.
5. Repeat with each remaining CD

Caution: Do NOT microwave CD's for too long or your significant other will kick your a$$ for stinking up the apartment.

As ovens may vary, you may need to increase your time to about 10 seconds.

High altitude directions:
No changes to recipie required.

o.k. wanna know somehting? i purchased a set of 10 cd's at compusa a few years back. i got errors on the 1st 2 cd's - i was pissed. they weren't cheap back then. so i took the rest of the package which was still mostly shrink-wrapped and put them in the microwave. for 10 seconds. I then took them back to compusa. they were mystified and returned my money immediately. the guy thought there was some sort of fungus growing in them.

IDIOTS! HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!

Actually.. The microwave trick works WAY better if you stand the CD's upright, using something like a lump of Blu Tak. Believe me.. It's better!

By the way, CD'r discs are often far less impressive. Due to their relative lack of metal content compared to regular pressed CD's.

Ok.. So this might not be enviromentally friendly, nor does it dispose of the discs.. But hey, It's a laugh! WaHey!

I have used the cd's to make fish scales and eyes and various other body parts of GIANT puppets for a New Year's Eve parade. Also, stage decorations for a school talent show and dance. It is tough to decorate when kids throw them around as frisbees though. I like the VRL's signaling device idea!
