I ordered my external FireWire QPS Que! 8x4x32 burner last night. This afternoon I got an e-mail saying it was cancelled. I called Outpost and they said they didn't have anymore...the last time they got any in was on 1/30/01 and they would no longer get any from QPS.

What do I do? Does this mean QPS is just coming out w/new stuff? I need alternatives now...I need an external, FireWire CD-RW.

Thanks,

--Danny

I have a Iomega CD-RW that's works wonderfully. You can order them direct from the Iomega site or pick up one at a CompUSA. They aren't on the fast side but they are reliable.

I would reccomend the Sony CRX140E firewire CD-RW.

It is fast, reliable, and comes with an excellent software package.

PS Most of my friends use Sony and Yamaha CD-RWs, and report few if any problems. I've heard mixed reviews on QPS and LaCie drives, though.

I'd buy on reliabilty, good warranty, and good tech support as opposed to having the last iota of speed or the lowest price.

Paying 10% less for a POS is never any solace once the problems begin

I have a QPS 12x10X32, and I am very happy with it. I have previously owned a 4x4x8 QPS, which also gave me no problems. Why not just buy one of the faster QPS drives? I believe they just announced a 16x10x40 model.

Danny, if you are decided on this drive, MacMall still has more than 300 units in stock, for $240. Check here: http://www.cc-inc.com/macmall/shop/d...asp?dpno=52867
they also have the newer 12x10x32 version, currently $300 at MacMall. http://www.cc-inc.com/macmall/shop/d...sp?dpno=951639

I have one of the 8x4x32 Qué FW drives and am very happy with it. If you feel like being convinced to choose a different burner, there are many threads discussing the merits of various brands. have a look around.

If you get a QPS 12x10x32, and it has the Teac drive in it, be prepared for some headaches. Had one, and returned it to Outpost. Retrospect doe not support this drive now, and has no plans to support it in the future. Also, firmware upgrades can only be done from a PC, as in Windows. Forget the QPS.

Bugs, very funny cartoon. I did and found out the same thing you did with the QPS Teac drive. Got it from Outpost and returned it, they were really good about it. I just purchased a Sony Spressa CRX1600L-A2 and it has been a dream so far. It comes with Retrospect Express which was my primary need for a drive in the first place. I just needed to do a custom install of the Retrospect Sony driver, I already had the program running other back-up functions. This was the experience I was expecting when I first got the Que. I don't know what they are doing over at QPS, but I will never buy another product from them. The Sony Spressa is a dream.

slider, I want to get the Spressa CRS1600L (firewire) to use with Retrospect 4.3. Can you really burn at 12x with Retrospect? How long does it take to fill up a disc using RE or 4.3? I had a 4x drive and it would take about 35minutes to burn one disk in a backup.

Yamaha all the way.
The CRW2100, 16*10*40, just rules, totally and undisputedly.
Nothing better than a Yamaha.

Was suprised this post was brought back to life, but anyways just thought I'd let you know I got the QPS Que! FireWire 8x4x32 CD-RW. $240, then there's the $30 rebate.

Worked fine except when I got it, Toast didn't detect the drive connected. I deleted Apple Disc Burner completley, rebooted and surprisingly Toast saw the drive and began working. Since then, I have burned a couple CD's.

BTW, the blank CD-R that comes with it is terrible! I used it and the quality of the songs was awful! I then burned the same songs (plus others) on some PNY CD-R's and playback was perfect. The included CD-R was so flimsy that I actually was able to break it in half. It shattered around me and my iMac into a million sparkly pieces. Reminds me I need to clean this sh*t up.

It is with the utmost regret that here today, just a few short hours after my much-loved and much-praised Que Fire 8x4x32 drive, from that company QPS which I have come to despise so much in the last month, died, I must issue a public apology to everyone to whom I have recommended this drive.

Cipher 13, will the Yamaha drive run on my beige G3/233? The box says it needs 300MHz. Any chance?

It does? Maybe it does to burn at full speed. A 233 G3 might do alright.
Hm.
I can't make any gaurantees... sorry... maybe someone with this burner can help? I have an older Yamaha... 8424 SCSI...
