I'm one of thousands facing useless laser printers under OS X (thanks Apple, thanks Epson).
So I wonder: will Jaguar fix the driver-less printer situation?
Or do I just spend the $150 and get the new Samsung 1210 laser which has OS X drivers that really print (what an unbelievable surprise!)
I've been happy with my Epson 5700i under OS 9 but it sits there useless these days.
Tell me your thoughts, please.
Thanks!

bohd,
There isn't anything Apple can do about other vendors who refuse to allocate the resources for OSX driver development (particularly when it comes to supporting older hardware).
If your printer (or other legacy device) isn't supported already, it probably never will be. Your best bet is to upgrade.

Printing nightmares? My Personal Laserwriter 320 has worked since the Public Beta and our Epson 1280 has been trouble-free too. I'm sorry you have an unsupported printer, but I don't think it qualifies as a nightmare.

Do some research on CUPS.
CUPS has drivers for *thousands* of printer models.
CUPS is included with 10.2.
Therefore, the answer is yes. Jaguar should solve all your problems.

Well I hope it fixes the problems...but too late for me now. I had a Umax 1220S Scanner and an Epson 600 printer. they have both been very good over the years...but they arnt supported by X. Well, I went out and got a Lexmark X73 which replaces BOTH and I am very happy with that decision. It scans better than my UMAX and prints better than my Epson...and it works in X. It is only $129 right now so it is a great buy. My point is upgrading is not that big of a deal.

Have you tried Vuescan with your scanner? I have a 2200 which works fine with Vuescan as a SCSI device. (Something about the way Umax implements USB makes it impossible for Vuescan to support.)

Due to the fact that OS X 10.2 comes with CUPS, the answer to the initial question is Yes. Jaguar will finally fix Apple's printing nightmares.
