I want to change the internal Sony 8x CDRW from my upcoming
dual 533 to something better (like Ricoh MP9120A-DP, Teac CD-W512SB or Plextor 1210TSi).

The problem is that I don't know the logic/reason why some drives are bootable with the new G4s and some are not. What's even more confusing, some drives are bootable unders OS X, but not under OS 9 (like the Ricoh combo drive).

So, I'm asking if anybody knows the logic or reason behind why some cdrw drives are bootable and some not. Is it a firmware issue? If so, what is required of the firmware in order for the drive to be bootable under OS 9? Has anybody tried hacking firmware code by combining patches from various sources?

I already know of the xlr8yourmac Drive Database and that I can find some sporadic information on about what drives are bootable. However, it does NOT tell me the reason for why some drives don't boot and whether there is any way to fix it.

I would appreciate any help.

regards,
Halcyon

PS The Ricoh DVD/CDRW combo has astonishing seek times compared to the Sony drives, it burns at 12x, has better version of Burn proof and can be fitted with hacked drivers (but no booting under OS 9).
