I bought a B&W G3 from a friend who used cable modem. I need an external modem, 56K. My Global Village modem won't work on this computer. I use OS9.04 and will not use 9.1 or OSX. I don't think there is room inside the computer for an internal modem because it has 3 internal hard drives, CD drive, and Zip drive. Is there a brand modem I can use with USB and 56K?

Actually their is room inside your G3 for an internal modem in its very own slot. You can buy one here.

Just a thought - you might consider going ISDN. I use a Sagem ISDN adapter (USB) with my G3 and it is FAR better than an internal 56K modem (which is still in there, but not used). And ISDN is quite affordable (at least it is here).

Best regards ...

Thanks for the replies, but I don't know what an ISDN is. Will probably try out that $39 inside modem mentioned in the above post. Can't think of anything else. USB can sure be a problem when one has so many SCSI peripherals!

ISDN is digital telephone. Someone at your phone company might be able to help you there.

As for SCSI, I dropped an Adaptec card into my G3, and I use SCSI peripherals without a problem.

I have a brand new GV/56K internal modem for the B&W G3 as well as a 6 month old external Zoom 56K USB modem for sale. We finally got cable modems and don't need these anymore. I also have a Motorola BitSurfer ISDN modem for sale.

Make me an offer.

OK, I know what a digital phone thing is now. We don't have that option in this small rural town. You mentioned an Adaptec SCSI card---mine has that also, but I don't really know what it means. I'm coming from a 5 year old G3/233 (beige desktop) and an iMac. Before that a Performa. So am not really up to date on current goodies and extras. I did order the above mentioned inside GV modem. Thanks.

if you have a PCI SCSI card in you computer, then it should make available at the back of your computer a SCSI port. you can connect SCSI peripherals to this normally, as you are used to doing.
