The iPod is designed to be synced with the first Mac you connect it to, in order to prevent you from illegally copying music from one computer to another -- of course this doesn't allow you to move your music when you replace the Mac, which is what it sounds like you're doing.
There are various apps that will allow you to "see" the music files so you can access them; I don't use or need them so I don't have any names handy but perhaps someone else can help out.

what i did was open itunes and change the settings to use it as a firewire HD so when you click on the ipod on the left bar in the itunes, you can see and access all the files. then i deleted all the songs from the ipod leaving it clean. then i manually put the files onto the ipod by dragging them to the icon and then you can see them when you plug your ipod into another computer under the ipod icon as a portable HD. true, it does take a little while to re-add the files, but it worked for me. i could wait the 10-20 minutes.

If you manually drag the songs on to the iPod when it is in 'firewire drive' can you still listen to the songs on your ipod, when you unplug it from the computer.

I believe that you can use an app called iPod Free File SynX 2.2.1 available at:
http://www.cooc.de/softies/
It is clearly meant for legitimate use only...

Go get Escape Pod or XPod from versiontracker.com - either will let you get to the music files on the iPod. Get them onto your hard drive, import them into iTunes on the new Mac, and then synch your iPod with the new Mac.
