We have a G4 400mhz that recently has refused to see our Epson Stylus 740 printer. We have reinstalled and reinstalled all the drivers, trashed preference files and so forth. As near as I can tell it (the computer) just isn't seeing that the printer is plugged into the usb port. Any other suggestions? Or maybe something similar has happened to someone else.

I had the same problem with the same printer and my iMac yesterday. I ended up using an epson usb printer installer that came with my old epson 440, but also had support for the 740. I would check epsons web site to see if they have usb installers to download.

Try using another USB cable. I had something similar happen to me, and it was a bad cable.

I had the same problem with my iMac DV SE and an Epson SC740. Someone told me to download the USB driver here: http://support.epson.com/cgi/downloa...C7455D.SEA.hqx
The drivers on the software disk that came with my 740 didn't include a USB driver. Try this one.
Good Luck,
kacey

I'm having the same problem as well... my imac rev b stopped seeing my epson 740 as soon as I installed OS9.04. The same thing happened to my father when he upgraded to os 8.6. Something about the install wipes the drivers, or something. I used the link you gave us, kacey, but it downloaded and expanded to serial drivers for me. Installing these made no difference... unless I'm forgetting something?
I can go to the chooser, select epson 740 from the left box, but the right box, which usually shows the USB symbol, is blank.
Agh.

As it turns out, the printer needed ink. Which is strange because the ink out light was on but not flashing (like documentation says it will when you need to replace the cartridge). However, in the chooser, there is still nothing in the right portion where it usually reads "USB port" or connection or whatever. It used to, now it doesn't. Still very strange.
On Andi's probem, I too couldn't locate any USB drivers on Epson's web site. The ones that I downloaded ultimately unstuffed as an installer for serial only.
Thanks for everyone's help.
