I've got a G4/400 with a Lacie USB writer connected to it.EVERY single time I try to burn a disc I get a buffer underrun. I didn't use to but this has been going on for a couple of months now. Any suggestions of what might be wrong?

Since this started happening, have there been any changes to your system, ie adding new software, upgrading the system, etc? Have you checked to see that you have the most recent version of toast (4.1.2)? Also, have you tried lowering the write speed to see if it burns at a slower rate? Sometimes this helps...

Another thought, are you running any other programs in the background that might be taking up system resources (ie SETI... etc)? This sometimes is the cause of buffer under-runs....

I'm not running other apps in the background since this is not possible with toast 4.1.1?? right? I have tried reformatting my HD and then it works for about 2 weeks. burning at only 2 speed doesn't make a difference. 1 speed works about 1 in 5 times...but it's not worth killing empty discs for.

You could have backgound things happening which would take up systems resources, an example might be filesharing (which happens in the background, but my guess is that this isn't happening every time you are burning cd's...)
I suggest reinstalling toast and updating it to the most current version (4.1.2) and see if that helps alleviate your problem...

I think your problem is a fragmented hard drive. I have the same problem but only when burning a Audio-Cd. Since it has to convert mp3- aiff in the background on the fly. De-Fragging your HD or converting your Mp3's before hand should fix the problem.

Increase the RAM cache in Toast prefs.
How much RAM do you have?
Also increase the Toast application itselfs RAM allocation via Finder -> Get Info.

Also don't even think about burning higher than 4 speed on a USB burner.
