I know I should research the archives, but I'm running out of time before Christmas.
My daughters both have a IIci and I'm looking for a serial printer for them. I know the SC740 has a serial port, but aren't there any OTHER printers? I didn't want to spend a lot of money since I have to buy two.
Thanks for any help.

The Epson 740 and the more expensive 900 were the last printers on the market to have the older Mac serial port. You won't have any luck finding a new printer with that anymore. Your best bet is to either buy a used printer or search the web for places that might still have 740's in stock at a discount.

I see Stylewriter II's and 1200's for under $10 at various thrift stores. I'm using a Color Stylewriter 1500 (adequate for the amount of color printing I do!) that I picked up for less than $7.00. The II's and 1200's are decent enough for B&W printing, and don't require the AC adapter that the 1500 does.

Thanks, but aren't the stylewriters dot matrix. I already have one of those.
I can find many PC compatible printers for $50-$100. Why can't I get a Mac compatible one?
Oh well, I guess I'll go with the SC740.
Thanks again....

Sorry, then I have an ImageWriter. It works, but it's very OLD!!! Maybe I'll look for a used StyleWriter.
Thanks.

ok, anyone.
I was a high bidder on a new SC 740 on ebay.
It will cost $89. ($70 for the printer and $19 for S/H.)
Is that a good deal?
I've hunted high and low for one of these and the best price I could find was $65 for a refurbished one. I just don't want to find out later I could have gotten one for $50 somewhere.
Thanks,
kacey

Epson only discontinued the 740 series a little over a month ago. It was going for $99 at the time. My questions would be: Is the printer new in the box? If so, the deal isn't so bad. There may be places that have it a little cheaper, but the printers will harder to find as time goes on, and you may only save a few bucks. It's probably best to buy this one and not waste time trying to save $10 or $15.

For the record, yes, they are new and you're right.
It's not worth any more hassle to save a few extra bucks.
I have these and they're already on their way.
We're also talking non-pro's here. One is 16 and the other is 12.
They're hardly worried about the specs.
All they wanted were color printers they could use with their IIci's.
Situation resolved, thank goodness!!
Merry Christmas, Everybody.
