OS 10.1.3
iTunes 2.0.3
iPod 1.0.4

1.) I plug my iPod into my iMac DVSE and it downloads all 575 of my songs in like 6 minutes. Great! But I notice some playlist tweaks that need to be done. I do them. Plug the iPod in again... And everything grinds to a halt. The iPod reboots, iTunes launches... And it just sits there. It says "Updating iPod. Do not disconnect." or whatever .. but nothing is really happening. The iPod display shows the FireWire symbol. The battery is charging... And every 5 or 10 seconds I hear the iPod's hard drive move, with the accompanying circular arrow animation in the top left corner of the display. But it's just for a split-second at a time, followed by another 10 seconds of silence and no movement. Sometimes, iTunes will say something like "Updating 1 of 17," with the title and info of the track being updated... But instead of zipping through the updates with FireWire speed... It just grinds away on that one track... Doing nothing.

Each time I end up unplugging the iPod, then using the Update/Restore utility to wipe it clean and start all over. I have to force-quit iTunes to get rid of the spinning (colour) disc.

Do I have a bum unit, is this a known issue... Or perhaps I'm doing something wrong?

2.) Much simpler... And forgive me. I've seen this addressed on these forums, but not to a satisfactory concensus. Is it harmful to leave the FireWire cable plugged in all the time, when not charging or updating the iPod?

Thx.

from my experience this is very uncommon, try the ipod updater by its self and then try launching itunes and start from there

The firewire: I don't see a reason you can't have it pluged in to the computer and not the Ipod, many have noticed that it gets a lot hoter when charging though, I use the external brick and leve that pluged in 24 7 no problems there

I took the iPod back to the retailer and exchanged it. Since I'm @ work, I have no idea yet whether Unit #2 will perform the same as the first. If it does, obviously the problem is on my Mac's end. That will surprise and disappoint me.

Just to be clear though... To those of you who use the iPod, say you add some new tracks to iTunes or re-arrange some playlists... Those updates should be just as fast as the initial download of your songs to the device, right?!

That is... Subsequent updates should only touch the items that have changed... And each song should be updated in just a second or two. If my initial "dump" of 570 songs to my iPod took just 6 minutes, making a few tweaks and updating again should take just a minute or so, right?

Maybe the above basic assumption on my part is wrong?

Yep, right first time. When I change playlists it often updates so fast I barely notice it's done it

New iPod. Problem solved.

Poor Sasha is back at the retailer, soon to be returned to Apple.

No name yet for the new one.

Thanks for throwing your 2-cents in there G4ME and Wulf.
