I have an iMac DV 400, and have bought a 45GB deskstar to replace my 10GB maxtor. I wish to connect both drives at once to transfer the data.

I realise there are previous threads on the connection of slave devices to earlier imacs (the ones with two seperate interfaces), but the DV only has one IDE bus which brings new problems.

The dvd drive has a 50pin laptop connection, as does the motherboard. This cable then becomes 40pin to connect the HD.

Can I plug a 40pin 3 terminal IDC cable onto the motherboard (maybe need to file the notch off the connector), then connect the 2 HDs to the imac?

Thanks,

Chris Birkinshaw

Just use an IDE cable with three connectors. Set one one HD to slave, the other to master. Hook both to the 3 connector cable and plug the spare end in the mobo. Worked with my Rev D iMac, should work just as well with yours.

Motherboard connector is a 50 pin though, like on the DVD drive. If I just push the 40 pin into the correct side of the 50pin connector will this work? (assuming first 40pins the same, then 50pin has extra ones for power digital audio etc.)

BTW: Does anyone know if digital audio can be extracted from the DVD drive from this 50pin connector????
