the audio out port on my pismo powerbook is shot and i presently don't have the time nor the money at this point to spend monies to get the whole inverter board placed. i'm going on a trip later this week and i'll need a solution to listen to tunes while on my trip.

therefore i am wondering for those who are presently using the iMic, how well does it work if you just want to connect headphones and listen to music?

it appears the iMic provides line level out, but how loud is the volument and is there any way in OS X where the output can be amplified?

i guess if push comes to shove, i can pick-up a cheap volumen controller from radio shack that will be between the iMic and headphones. but any insight at all would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Also: Where is the cheapest place to obtain an iMic? (I need one for my Cube)

Whenever I see them going on e-bay they tend to sell for around $40-$45 which I believe is above retail.

Well, looks like no one really knows the answer to my question. Anyways, the price on those iMic's really aren't that bad, about $35 from your favorite Mac computer store, well at least that's how much they cost in Philly.

I have connected my G4 to my stereo through the iMic. This might have different results than when connected to headphone. To get normal volume on my stereo I have to set the volume to highest. But the quality is far better than with the normal minijack out.
I'd really like to try and connect my iPod earbuds, but unfortunately they're down in my car and me already in my bed
Amplification in Os X? hmm, either i have never seen that or didn't get your question. Hope this helped -matt

Update:

I've been here in France for a few days and I just wanted to update you folks on the iMic.

It works fantastic! Not only does it output line level, but you can actually use the volume control to amplify the volume. This is in OS X, so I'm not quite sure if you'll have the same effects in 9.

Stay away from the Macally iVoice, which is a USB microphone / line level audio out. It does not amplify the audio the slightest bit.

So, for those of you folks who have busted (worn-out) your audio port on your Pismo PowerBook and don't mind a dongle and don't mind not wanting to pay $200+ to replace the audio board, I highly recommend the iMic. It works great with headphones. Accept NO imitations.
