hi
I have just upgraded from a 17' Apple Studio Display (CRT) to a 21'
and have noticed that the 21' is not as sharp
everything looks foggy - especially words
is there any way to adjust this (the degauss button in system preferences is blanked out)
any ideas?

Have you got it set to the native resolution?

it's set to 1600 x 1200 at 85hz millions of colours
also - there is a slight area of yellow at the bottom of the screen (have tried to adjust with beam landing option but it's still a bit yellow)

I assume you have checked all connections and everything. Sounds like the display's faulty

1600x1200 is a very high resolution for a CRT. Even if it were new, it would have problems displaying 1600x1200 brilliantly. Now that the display is easily five years old, all components have aged. In particular this means that the picture won't be as bright and not as sharp.
Also, if you had the last CRT 17" display Apple has ever made, then the crt tube is of a much more modern design than the 21" display. If that is the case, you have rather made a downgrade than an upgrade.
So in essence, you are using an old display with the most demanding settings and you see sub-standard results. This is not surprising by any means.
<edit>BTW, I have also moved this thread to the peripherals section. </edit>

[removed broken and unnecessary quote of previous message --tooki]
I know which one you mean (the clear one) but this is the old blue (for blue&white g3) studio display

Are you talking about the 17" display?
Well, in any case, the only remedy you have is to lower the resolution to 1280x1024 (or alternatively 1280x960 if that is offered in the system settings). If that is still too much and you are not satisfied with the quality of the image, I wouldn't bother and buy a new monitor.
