I've got some friends with a scarcely used 6500/300. Its got a 40 GB HD and max RAM - and a DIN-8 printer output. For their use, it suits them fine and they really have no need for a new machine. But, their Color Stylewriter 4500 is about to bite the dust. They want a new printer, but everything I see out there is either USB or USB/IEEE-1284 input.

Question - does anyone know of a current printer (reasonably priced) that will accept a serial input? I think they're willing to spend to about $200 for a replacement. The discontinued Epson 740 was a real winner in input connector flexibility. Or - does anyone make a serial to USB or IEEE-1284 adapter/cable?

I will be a hero to them, if I get an answer - you will be a hero to me, if you help.

Thanks!

Problem solved. Get a Keyspan PCI USB card and, as long as they're running OS 8.6 or higher, they can use any Mac compatible usb printer on the market. Put the card in the machine, and it gives them USB capability. The card is about $30, and USB printers, like the Epson C60, etc., run anywhere from $80 on up.

There is no adaptor to turn the serial port into USB, so this is your only option.
Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

OR... I have a very good Cannon BJC4550 that is dual PC/mac compatable. It has a serial input. It prints 11/17 and is color. I also have a pack of three color cartridges and two black ink cartridges to go with it. Email me if interested ** d e r r i c k AT universaladvertising dot com ** (sorry, but I don't need more junk mail from the spam scanners).
